Location: St James Gate, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Project Overview
HLA Services was contracted to support the replacement of an ageing Lennox chiller at St James Gate, Newcastle, with a new 450kW Carrier chiller.
The project required careful coordination of the existing chiller’s removal, lifting operations, electrical supply and chilled water connections. The works were planned and carried out out of hours to minimise disruption to the site and ensure the replacement could be completed efficiently.
Scope of Work
- 450kW Carrier Chiller Replacement – Removal of the existing ageing Lennox chiller and installation of a new 450kW Carrier chiller.
- Contract Lift – Bray Cranes carried out the contract lift out of hours, safely removing the existing chiller and positioning the new Carrier chiller.
- Roof Preparation – Preparation of the designated roof area to allow the existing chiller to be removed and the new unit positioned.
- Electrical Connection – Utilising the existing electrical infrastructure to provide power to the new chiller.
- Chilled Water Connections – Isolation and removal of the existing flow and return connections to facilitate the replacement chiller installation.
- Installation & Removal – Coordinated removal of the existing Lennox chiller and installation of the new Carrier unit.
- Out-of-Hours Working – Works were scheduled out of hours to help minimise disruption to the building and its occupants.
Project Coordination
The project required close coordination between HLA Services and the crane team to ensure the existing chiller could be safely removed and the new Carrier chiller positioned and connected efficiently.
HLA Services coordinated the mechanical and electrical requirements associated with the replacement, including site preparation, electrical supply and isolation of the existing chilled water flow and return connections.
Bray Cranes carried out the contract lift out of hours, allowing the existing Lennox chiller to be removed and the new 450kW Carrier chiller safely positioned on the roof.
The works were carefully planned around the operational requirements of the site, with the out-of-hours programme helping to minimise disruption during the replacement.
Results & Client Benefits
The project provided:
- Replacement of an ageing Lennox chiller with a new 450kW Carrier chiller
- Safe and coordinated removal and positioning of the chillers
- Contract lift operations completed out of hours by Bray Cranes
- Efficient connection to the existing electrical and chilled water infrastructure
- Minimal disruption through carefully planned out-of-hours working
- A coordinated installation programme covering removal of the existing unit and installation of the replacement
HLA Services provided a coordinated mechanical and HVAC solution to replace the ageing chiller at St James Gate, helping provide the site with a new 450kW Carrier cooling system while minimising disruption to building operations.
