The image of the dust extraction unit shows an install for a client controlling various dust for a food process.
The unit comprises of a dust collector, vertical explosion relief panel and a none return valve to prevent any explosion returning back to the workplace. Bespoke captor hoods were designed, fabricated and fitted to control the substance hazardous to health into the hood and away from the operators breathing zone.
All duct work was completed at our fabrication facility at Seaham Grange Ind Est.
COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations are designed to protect workers from exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. Dust extraction is essential when dealing with COSHH for several reasons:
- Health Risks: Dust particles generated from various materials can pose significant health risks when inhaled. These particles can contain harmful substances such as chemicals, allergens, or carcinogens. Prolonged exposure to these hazardous dusts can lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, or even serious long-term health issues like lung diseases or cancer.
- Compliance with Regulations: Many countries have strict regulations regarding exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace, including limits on dust concentrations. Implementing effective dust extraction systems helps ensure compliance with these regulations, thereby reducing the risk of fines, legal issues, or other penalties.
- Worker Safety and Well-being: Providing a safe working environment is crucial for employee well-being and productivity. Dust extraction systems help minimize the presence of airborne particles, creating a healthier and safer workplace for employees. This not only reduces the risk of immediate health problems but also promotes long-term employee satisfaction and retention.
- Prevention of Contamination: In certain industries, such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, or electronics manufacturing, dust contamination can compromise product quality and safety. Dust extraction plays a vital role in preventing cross-contamination by removing airborne particles that could settle on products, machinery, or surfaces, ensuring product integrity and consistency.
- Fire and Explosion Hazards: Some types of dust, such as those generated from certain chemicals, metals, or organic materials, can pose fire and explosion hazards under certain conditions. Dust extraction systems help mitigate these risks by removing combustible dust from the air, reducing the likelihood of ignition sources coming into contact with dust clouds and minimizing the potential for catastrophic incidents.
- Environmental Considerations: Effective dust extraction not only protects workers but also helps minimize environmental pollution. Dust emissions released into the atmosphere can have adverse effects on surrounding ecosystems and communities. By capturing and containing dust at the source, extraction systems contribute to reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
In summary, dust extraction is essential when dealing with COSHH to safeguard the health and safety of workers, ensure regulatory compliance, prevent contamination and product quality issues, mitigate fire and explosion hazards, and minimize environmental impact.
